iPad in Education

Picture

Six months after the release of the original iPad, we began exploring the possible implications, both positive and negative, of the iPad being set as the "standard" for all education, from K - College.  Dozens of individuals have contributed to different possible "first-order" implications, including scoring implications from four different perspectives: low income students, teachers, parents, and Apple.

Details of the Center

A consortium of schools, K through college, plus public, private, and government agencies has set the iPad as the "standard" for educational applications.

iPad's for education are minimum 64GB with WiFi connectivity. They are pre-loaded with a variety of educational apps. Apps are added and updated regularly through the consortium.

Educational resources includes:

  - textbooks
  - reference materials
  - schedules
  - assignments
  - workbooks
  - drills / practice exercises

Assumptions:

Apple, under the agreement, will license the technology to additional manufacturers of tablets. The license will include platform compatibility to insure educational "apps" will run on all licensed machines. The license with Apple will also address minimal features, i.e., screen size, cameras, etc. An annual review with the "consortium" will address and approve details of the licensing issues and adjustments necessary to assure an adequate supply of tablets.

Individuals who purchase iPad's directly will be able to "update" their tablets to obtain the educational features via a readily available upgrade at the App store.
